He was on voyage to meet his wife and daughter who were visiting relatives, and he returned with them on the SS Potosi. This detailed diary describes weather; birds and fish; food, games and entertainment; wind and sails; religious services; daily latitude and longitude; distance travelled; welfare of his parrots; sleeping on deck; airing matresses on deck; prickly heat; the Suez canal; arrival in Plymouth; fogs at Dover; ; return to Melbourne; storms; animals being killed on board; outbreak of measles; arrival on the S.A. Coast; seeing bushfires on the Adelaide Hills; flying the yellow flag; seeing sharks. After the diary is an insert briefly describing the family's life back in Melbourne; children and grandchildren.
